Wheatgrass has become one of the most widely consumed natural foods. Loaded with natural vitamins, minerals, chlorophyll, and enzymes which feed your cells and eliminate toxins, wheatgrass is perfect for athletes, raw-foodists, people on the go, and anyone suffering from pain or illness.
Wheatgrass is easy to grow in Thailand and can be juiced or even chewed if you do not have a suitable juicer for juicing leafy greens such as wheatgrass. Growing wheatgrass can be done in nearly any kind of container too as long is it has drainage and can be grown with or without soil however we recommend with soil.
There are many methods to growing wheatgrass and you can research to determine which you prefer.
Here are the steps we use grow wheatgrass:
Soak the seeds in water for about 12- 24 hours. Be sure and change the water often and make sure the seeds are not to crammed or they can rot.
Move the seeds to either a porous surface, we like to use a plastic sieve, or to a tray with a layer of soil, it does not have to be deep. One inch, 2.4 cm, is enough. Make sure the tray has holes for draining.
spread the seeds evenly and make sure they are in a single layer. If there are to many in a small area then the seeds become prone to mold.
You can cover the seeds in the tray with more soil but we have found it is not necessary.
Place the tray in a warm dark place for a couple of days to encourage the seeds to grow. You can cover the tray but do not let the seeds dry out.
Water the seeds about 2x a day. We like to put them in the sieve for about a day or 2 then move them to the dirt. This way when we can rinse them well and they get lots of air.
Place the tray outside where there is some sunlight, we find in Thailand direct sunlight all day may be to much. We put them where there is partial sun.
Keep watering 2x a day
Your wheatgrass will grow rapidly to about 8 - 10 in /20 - 24 cm in 7 to 10 days if the conditions are good and should look nice and green.
Get some scissors and cut the wheatgrass at the bottom of the stem as near to the surface as possible. Like all fresh home-grown produce, it is best to use immediately although your cut wheatgrass will keep for up to seven days in the refrigerator.
You will be able to get a second crop so after cutting, water again 2x a day until the grass grows again.
Once juiced be sure to drink immediately to get the most benefit
Be sure to store your wheat grass seeds in an insect proof container. Best to use within a month.
Here you can see were are sprouting wheat grass. The plastic sieve works fine and it is not necessary to buy expensive sprouters.
If you are sprouting in an area prone to ants be sure to but it in a bowl with water at a very low level as to not rot the seeds but to keep the ants out.
